About Sitamarhi

Sitamarhi is a district in the north of Bihar, in the Tirhut division and the Mithila region. It was carved out of Muzaffarpur district on 11 December 1972.

The district takes its name from Maa Sita. Punaura, on the edge of the town, is held to be the place where she appeared from the earth, and the Janaki Temple there is the reason pilgrims arrive all year. The district's own name is usually read as “the city in the middle of Maa Sita's land”.

The administrative headquarters are at Dumra, about five kilometres south of Sitamarhi town. The headquarters was moved there after the January 1934 earthquake devastated the town.

The district administration gives its area as 2,294 sq km, its population as 34,23,574 and its literacy rate as 52.05 per cent, counting the provisional 2011 Census figures it publishes. It has three sub-divisions — Sadar, Pupri and Belsand — seventeen blocks, 258 gram panchayats, five municipalities and twenty-one police stations.

Figures, offices and telephone numbers below are copied from Sitamarhi District Portal (sitamarhi.nic.in) on 4 November 2026. Officers change with transfers, so confirm anything you intend to act on directly with the office.
