What the census says about the district
The 2011 Census counted 34,23,574 people in Sitamarhi — the figure the district portal still publishes, with a literacy rate of 52.05 per cent. The final census tables put literacy at 53.53 per cent, the sex ratio at 899 women per thousand men and density at about 1,567 people per sq km. Both sets of numbers are reproduced here, with their source, because both are official.
No census has been taken since. When the next one is published, the district's figures will be revised here.
The population is overwhelmingly rural: five municipalities carry the urban count, and the remaining 845 revenue villages are administered through 258 gram panchayats under one Zila Parishad.
Figures, offices and telephone numbers below are copied from Sitamarhi District Portal (sitamarhi.nic.in) on 4 November 2026. Officers change with transfers, so confirm anything you intend to act on directly with the office.
