The year in the district
Maa Sita Navmi, in the spring, is the district's own festival — the birthday of the goddess the town is named for, kept at Punaura and the Janaki Temple with the wedding party of Videha re-enacted around the temple.
Vivah Panchami in the autumn marries Rama and Maa Sita again, and the temples of the district hold the ceremony with the same procession. Haleshwar Sthan takes the light during Shravan, when the road north-west of the town fills with kanwariyas.
Chhath, on the bank of any water that holds, is the fourth great gathering: two days of fasting and the evening and morning offerings to the sun. Diora and Makar Sankranti bring the sesame and the new rice; Eid and Muharram are kept in the same streets.
