Sitamarhi is an agricultural district on irrigated plain. Paddy is the main crop in both its seasons; the orchards around the town are known for mango, and lychee comes in with it in the better years. Wheat follows the rice in the cold season on the land that holds water.

The district portal lists a District Industries Centre but no large industrial town, and the economy carries a great many small traders, shops and workshops rather than factories. A substantial part of household income arrives as remittances from members working in the larger cities, which is why the district records high population and comparatively few large houses.
