The shrine that gives the district its name. A Hindu ascetic named Birbal Das is credited with clearing the jungle over the site about five hundred years ago, finding the stone figures set up by Raja Janak and building the first temple. The present Janaki Mandir is roughly a century old.
Religious and historical significance
Held to be the spot where Maa Sita appeared from the earth; the Janaki Temple stands here.
