Geography and climate
Flat land, river silt and a long monsoon
Sitamarhi lies in the northern part of Bihar, close to the Nepal border, in the flat country of the Mithila plain. The district administration gives its area as 2,294 sq km; the Census of India district handbook gives 2,185 sq km. Both figures are in use, and the difference is a matter of how much of the river bed is counted.
The land is alluvial and made by the rivers that bound it. It is cultivated to the last field, which is why the district carries so many small habitations: 845 revenue villages for just over three million people.
The climate is that of the north Bihar plain — a hot, dry season before the monsoon, then the rain that fills the ponds and the canals. The best time to travel is October to March.
The district portal lists Hindi and English as the languages of administration; the language of the home is Maithili.
